The News for the Months of May and June

Great News! Spring has arrived at the Acorn Creek Garden Farm!

May is typically the month when we prepare the ground for seeding.
June is the month when we sow the seeds and move the little seedlings from the greenhouses to the fields.

May and June are also the months when many of our customers want the freshest vegetables possible.
They also want annuals and perennials, potted plants and hanging baskets of flowers to beautify their homes.
Of course the greenhouses are full of newly grown vegetables during these months.

The following products are available at the farm in late May and through June:

Tomatoes, Cucumbers and Sweet Peppers
Our customers love our greenhouse-grown tomatoes, cucumbers and sweet peppers
which are in plentiful supply this year as usual.


Mesclun Mix, Spring Salad Mix and Herbs
Cindy's and Jun's very popular mesclun mix is ready for pickup. These are also a great favorite.
We also have spring salad mix and other herbs including basel for sale.

Asparagus, Parsnips and Other Vegetables
Other vegetables currently available include asparagus, parsnips and Jerusalem artichoke.

Bedding Plants
Bedding plants are essential for homeowners who are interested in creating flower gardens or container gardens. These are in good supply this year at the farm along with planted containers and baskets.

Hanging Flower Baskets
Hanging baskets of flowers are a fast and easy way to beautify one's home or business. We have increased the supply this year in response to customer demand.

Potted Plants
Want to create an instant vegetable or herb garden? Potted plants are the simplest, fasterst and hassle free way to impress your neighbors and friends. Our potted tomatoes, peppers and herbs are very popular with customers.

Annuals and Perennials
We have a wide variety of annuals and perennials to help you create an instant garden. Come in and examine our great supply of beautiful flowering plants and vegetables.

Cindy's Preserves
Of course Cindy has a wide variety of her very popular preserves ready for pickup. These include vinegars, jams, jellies and so on.

Chocolate Truffles
These are not the ordinary run-of-the-mill products from the farm.
Andy likes to make these for customers who have a sweet tooth.
If you are a chocaholic or have a chocaholic friend, you should try one of these.

Strawberries

Strawberries are typically available beginning mid-June and into July. Watch for our fall strawberries beginning in August and continuing until frost.

The News for the Months of July and August

Great News!! Summer is here. We have had a great strawberry crop this year and we expect there to be decent picking until mid-July. We also have peas (sugar snap, snow peas ad garden peas), tomatoes and lettuce now available. By the end of July we expect to have beans (green and yellow), broccoli, carrots and beets. Our perennial favorite mesclin is also available. As usual, we will be at the Carp Farmer's Market on Saturday between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. Please check our harvest calendar for the seasonal availability of our fruit and vegetable produce.

There are several big events in July and August which we at Acorn Creek always attend. One is the Herb Fest, held this year on Sunday, July 27. For more information, please click here. The second big event is the garlic festival. This is a two day event, held this year August 9-10 at the Carp Fair Grounds. There is no admission. Click here for more information.


Strawberries, Raspberries, Red and Black Currants
The strawberry season usually ends early July. The next crop of strawberries (late season varieties) begins in August and continues until frost in October or November.

The raspberries are ready for picking. There is a great crop this year. We have black, yellow and red rasberries.

We will also have red and black currants in August.


Peas, Beans and Carrots!!!
Peas: We have sugar peas, pod peas and snow peas. They become available for purchase in mid-July and the season extends throughout the summer. Beans: Both yellow and green beans become available at the end of July.

Tomatoes, Cucumbers and Zuccini!!!
The early crops of tomatoes and cucumbers are grown in the greenhouse throughout June and early July. By mid-July, the field tomatoes and cucumers become available. Both are very plentiful this year at the farm.
Mesclun, Lettuce, Spinach and Basil!!!
These are some of our most popular products. We harvest these from the greenhouses from the early spring and into July when we begin to harvest the field corps. Mesclun is a perennial favorite. We have difficulty keeping up with demand. Our customers love it because of its health value. We mix over six varieties of lettuce and herbs. We also sell spinach and basil by the bag.
Garlic, Garlic and More Garlic
Need we say more? Garlic is one of the most popular of our produce and its popularity continues to increase each year. This year we harvested over 40,000 bulbs beginning in mid-July. We have six varieties, including Music, Red German and Elephant. Each year we enter several varieties in Eastern Growers Garlic Fest in August held at the Carp Farmers Market and they usually win top prizes.

The News for the Months of September and October

Great News!! Autumn is here. Fruits and vegetables in season or about to come into season include: tomatoes, lettuce, beans (green and yellow), broccoli, carrots and beets. Our perennial favorite mesclin is still available as usual. We will also have fresh strawberries until the first frost. Please check our harvest calendar for the seasonal availability of our fruit and vegetable produce.

 


Egg Plant, Kale, Brussel Sprout, Cabbage, Brocolli, Cauliflower, Beets, Rutabaga, Kolrabi
These are perennial favorites for Acorn Creek customers. We have several varieties of each. They become available beginning in September and they are best when it begins to turn cold and especially when nipped by frost.
Corn
We have some of the best tasting corn varieties in the region. We have yellow, white and bicolored corn varieties.
Squash and Pumpin
September and October are great months for squash and pumpkin. Acorn Creek offers many common varieties of squash such as spaghetti, pepper, acorn, butternut and hubbard as well as some very special varieties like Carnival. We also have pumpkin varieties for both eating/cooking and for decoration at Halloween.
Melons - Over 10 Delicious and Wonderful Varieties
You will not find more delicious varieties of melons in Canada or even norther United States.

Potatoes

Acorn Creek sells the following varieties of potatoes: blue, ruby gold, yukon gold, banana (fingerling) and temagimi to name the most common and popular varieties.
